Embedded Android for dedicated devices.
Custom Android builds for panels, kiosks, POS terminals and smart devices, with your hardware drivers, your launcher and nothing your users don’t need.
Embedded Android at picoBytes
Android gives a dedicated device a familiar touch interface, a huge app ecosystem and strong media support. Out of the box, though, it’s built for phones. Dedicated devices need a locked-down experience, support for custom hardware and a way to update every unit in the field.
We customise AOSP for your board, integrate drivers through the HAL, build kiosk and launcher apps, and set up updates and device management so your fleet stays secure.
What we do
AOSP customisation
Trimmed, branded Android builds with your boot animation, settings and permissions.
BSP & HAL integration
Drivers and hardware abstraction layers for displays, sensors, serial ports and custom peripherals.
Kiosk & launcher apps
Single-app and multi-app kiosk modes, custom launchers and locked-down settings.
System apps & services
Privileged apps for hardware control, background services and device-to-app communication.
OTA & fleet updates
System update packages and remote device management for deployed units.
Performance tuning
Boot time, memory and power optimisation for lower-cost hardware.
From first call to launch
Discover
We map the requirement, constraints and budget, and agree on what “done” looks like.
Prototype
A proof-of-concept board, clickable design or first build that tests the riskiest parts early.
Build
Development in short milestones with regular demos, on real hardware and real screens.
Launch & support
Production handover, store or server deployment, and updates after release.
Common questions
Do we need a full AOSP build, or is an app enough?
If the stock Android image on your board already supports your hardware, a kiosk app may be enough. If you need custom drivers, branding or tight lockdown, a custom AOSP build is the way. We’ll tell you which after a short review.
Can our device run without Google services?
Yes. Many dedicated devices don’t need Google Mobile Services. We can build an image without them and deliver app updates through your own channel.
Can Android talk to our microcontroller or serial devices?
Yes. We build the HAL or system service that connects Android to your UART, RS485, USB or GPIO hardware, plus the API your app uses.
How do we update devices after deployment?
With signed OTA update packages delivered from your server or a device management platform, so updates don’t need a technician on site.
